Stumble out of bed, find which of the 3 smoke alarms is beeping, wonder what the hell, since they are tied into the electrical of the house…oh it’s a backup battery…extract battery
BEEP
Remove smoke alarm from ceiling, disconnect from power…
BEEP
Me:”Huh? It’s go no power?”
Beeeooop…clck…bzzz…
Of course, by this time the cats have figured out that I am up so it must be time to feed them so they run back and forth, up and down the hallway, I guess they were playing tag or something. All I know is that I was trying to go back to sleep at the same time that they decided my feet were home base.
Next up, the damn Ford Motor Co jingle resumes running through my head, reminding me that it is “Time to drive a Ford, again”. I have had this jingle in my head for 2 days now…
Cat one catches cat two and much tussling, hissing and flopping about ensues.
It’s time to drive a Ford again.

OMFG, these guys are driving from the UK to Alaska, by way of Russia and across the Bering Strait. Cruising along in a highly modified Land Rover, they recently crossed over the Bering Strait into Alaska. There is a great gallery of the crazy vehicles these guys have been using on their site.
They will probably have a bit of a rough time with the Darien Gap, though.
I have been thinking about organizing a drive from Pittsburgh to the Arctic Circle, just because I can.
Nothing boils a bunch of complex data into a tasty nugget of info like a well created graph. Us geek love graphs, and really, how else could anyone comprehend something as complex as web traffic?

Divorce is tough to quantify in the U.S. Cases are ajudicated in 50 jurisdictions, and many states notoriously hold these stats close to their vests  regardless if they track rate information and trends or not.
The A/P yesterday updated stuff that probably took three years to compile and get straight; the national divorce rate dropped a smidgeon to a ‘low’ 45-or-so percent…down from 50% in the late nineties.

My Allergies are bad — really bad.
I’m working on many things right now.
1) Doing some data entry to build a new data collection form for the Annual Report.
2) Helping debug some java.
3) Working to massage the data from last year’s Annual Report.
4) Writing some data import/export scripts to get our systems to talk with one of our web hosting services.
5) Learning Sharepoint.
I’m busy these days, I like it, and it is challenging.
But I’m tired and allergic.
So there.
I’m at our national convention all week this week. Load-In, do support in the cyber cafe and Load-Out.
My allergies are killing me, and I’m really trying to do more about feeling better than I have in the past. This means that I’m rinsing my sinuses out with a nettie pot. It seems to be the best treatment for me.
Other than that, I’m working on a web app done in Ruby On Rails these days.

Yep, turns out that March 20th is ‘Alien Abduction Day‘.
When you’re buildinig an application, even if it isnt a web app, todays activities got me thinking about the perfoamce really is our application.
We use access as the frontend and SQL Server as the backend. Access is great for small databases, and little forms that dont work with much data.
Once you grow to more than 25 users, and you have multiple paths that provide access to the database (i.e. the Access UI, and a web interface) things start to fail the scalability challenge really fast.
