It was in the Fall of ‘94 and time for budget reviews in Chicago. I was pretty torn up, so I asked my buddy’s wife if I could scoop up Mike so he could drive and hang with me–my boss didn’t have any problem with it, since my collegues brought along their wives, anyway. There’d be plenty for him to do while I was working for the couple of days we’d be up there.
Carol said sure and took my son (a year younger than her daughter, much later to be my Ritz-Carlton ‘brunch date’ (another story, perhaps).
Mike and I cruised north, testing the capabilities of the rental Caddy that Avis gave us. MAN, it was a cool ride–the sort of trip that will rejuvenate your soul. We cackled like a couple of hens the entire trip……
….not two weeks later, Earth Wind and Fire came to the Fabulous Fox Theater (Grand Ave, StL). Mike and I centered the 12th row, with perhaps 1-2 other white fans, and unlike (white) rock concerts where ladies are frisked and their purses checked, wonderfully well-dressed ladies and gentlemen sauntered in to their seats.
The cat next to me shared a goodly share of his pint with me (Wild Turkey as I recall) and the band lit the house up. The completely (almost) intact band that started in the late sixties made it look easy, the (3) drummers pounded complete sense into the World and tagged permanent goosebumps into our souls.
Mike and Carol haven’t changed a bit, but their children sure have–this is a family that produced two young and MAJOR attributes to the human race, which is a mighty fine contribution, I say. Thank you, Mike (and Carol)!!!
