The Telegraph is running a series of excerpts from ‘Affluenza‘ by Oliver James. What the hell is Affluenza you ask?
affluenza (AF.loo.en.zuh) n. An extreme form of materialism in which consumers overwork and accumulate high levels of debt to purchase more goods (affluence + influenza).
This creeping evil is one of the reasons things are so mucked up here in the States. Keeping up with the Jones’s has become endemic, and destructive, separating us from what really matters. Having fallen victim to this virus myself, I am trying very hard to deal with the fallout. Give it a read, and some thought, it’s worth it.
