So I’ve moved back to Pittsburgh, and I sometimes grab the subway at the Steel Plaza station when it’s raining, which is fairly often around here. Anyone who rides public transit may find this amazing, because everyone who was waiting for the train was lined up, single file, approximately where the doors for the train would be. There was nobody there telling them to do that, they just self-assembled into the most considerate, efficient way to get on the train. Most of the time I find something to gripe about, but this really impressed me, and it happens everyday at rush hour. Who’da thunk, huh?

For those of you who don’t know I am Miriam, Dave’s older but just as goofy, sister.  I live in the wonderful city of Boston. Of which Dave has never visited me…hint, hint Dave…:) So he wanted me to be a part of this reportoire and I said Yes, of course. So here I am. I too hate my job, am fiercely looking for another, and in the midst of all this trying to get my MBA, and spend time with my 3 kids and my boyfriend (does that word apply if you are 40+?) So, I say Hello to all and look forward to many interesting discussions
So, I bought an iPod Nano. No, I didn’t get the 8GB one. I got the blue one.
I took it with me on my 30 mile ride on Grants Trail. I have mixed feelings about it. I think its dangerous to ride with it.
But it did help my ride. I was so focussed on music, I stopped paying attn to my legs. They fell into a wonderful cadence that I could have kept all day… That was different. For anyone that knows me, you know that I push myself hard. This is good and bad. Its good because I advance quickly. It’s bad because my muscles are damned tired, and you know - my legs really hurt.
So, having the music helped me to mellow my cadence, and that made for a easier ride all around.
The biggest drawback if I may say is that the earbuds dont fit in my ear well. They kept falling out during the ride. This constant distraction is bad. I think I’ll tape them to my face next time, and see if that helps.
Yet again, I’m foiled by some physical deformity. Damn it to hell. It’s not BOTH ears - its ONE ear - my right ear. I’m not pitching a fit at Apple here, I’m just saying for crying out loud, I’m down, by one hip here! Do I really need to added ear discrepancy?
Well, I’ve been reading this guys blog. He’s really smart, and alot of good working advice on his site.
He has a bunch of information that has been really helpful in my attempts at getting OS X to interoperate with my LDAP server. I’m now making users in LDAP that can login to my laptop, sans home directory, and OS X will make that for them, and everything. So, that is pretty great.
Now I just need to test various things, and answer various other interesting questions. Mostly concerning the legacy netinfo database, and how that impacts queries to the ldap server, and how the results form those queries impact user privileges.
It’s all pretty interesting.
Pittsburgh is a cool town, lots of nice shoes and even nicer legs…ehem…err…yeah…snicker.
Not surprisingly, I have been re-visiting my favorite places from my formative years, I still go to the river bank when I am upset, and it still calms me down. I love the sound of the barges tooting their horns to open the locks, and how genuinely friendly all of my neighbors are.
I have lots on my plate now, but I know that it will all resolve and I will be a better person because of it.
