Time sure flies

Three years ago I called Dave and asked if I could sleep on his couch. I moved out of what is now my ex-wifes house, and proceeded to get a divorce and get on with my life.

Aaaaargh!

Ahoy!
I don’t know if anyone else likes simulation games, but I do. I just got myself a copy of “Tropico2, Pirate’s Cove“. Developed here in St. Louis by Pop Top software, it is a way fun way to lose many hours and ignore those around me.

Floor

I’m re-doing my kitchen. I’ve painted, and now I’m laying a peel and stick tile floor.

Weekend!

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *What a weekend. There’s nothing like getting away from the computers, and doing something totally domestic.

This weekend my girlfriend came over and helped me paint my kitchen. We scraped up the linoleum on the floor, and painted new colors. I’m really initerested in the whole color mixing process in paint.

When you go to Home Depot, and they mix a can of paint (By the way, they will mix custom colors in quart cans too - I though they’d only mix a gallon…) they grab a can of white, and they punch a bunch of stuff into a computer that then pours the correct quantity of color into the can, which is then shaken to mix it.

When you watch the machine pouring colors, it pours stuff that you’d never expect into that can.

Do I remember my color theory classes right, and paint color is not additive, while color of light is? I think that’s right. I wonder how much they have to take into account reactions between the different elements that make up what they are pouring in to influence the final color? Hmmm…
I found two good google links that explain the color mixing theory pretty well here and here.

Anyway, we painted over this weekend, we tore up the old floor, now its time to lay down the new one.

When I’m not geeking out, I’ve been cooking, so I wanted to make my kitchen a place I really wanted to be in.

What happenned?

Well,

I’ve been getting 192kbps both ways over a DSL connection for about 2 years now. Even with that bandwidth, this site gets about 25,000 hits a month.

But, I wanted more…

I called up SBC, and told them that I was sick of the speed problem, and I wanted it fixed.

There was lots of talk, and then a technician was rolled to my house to examine my phone line. The decision was that I could not sustain any better throughput until something was ifxed on the physical line itself.

Electrically, my house tested at 18,000 feet from the CO. So you’d expect pretty piss poor performance. Another engineer was dispatched to my house. He removed about 600 feet of phone line from my local loop. I theory a better connection as possible.

I have an OLD Speedstream 5660 modem this modme is not recognized by any techs when you call in for support. So, I bought a new modem. My friedns recommend a Zoom 5554 X5. I bought one.

Then I finally asked the right question - “Is there an RT in range of me?”
Tech: “Hmmm… Let me check.”
Hemming and hawing…
Tech: “Why yes there is.”
Me: “Well, wire me over to that bitch, and lets go.”

And that was the beginning of Dave’s DSL upgrade saga.

We’re baaack…

It’s a long story. Ending with my stupid decision to upgrade the web server to Fedora Core 2. Boy do I hate these modern Apache Installs that dont have all the guts to make real applications work.

Anyway, I’m going out for a well deserved dinner.

Hope you all had a great New Years Eve!
