Bear with me here, I know that some of these are a bit sophmoric, but my kids (11 and 8 years old) helped me out with these…

“Mmmmm you can find me in St. Louie
Where the gun play ring all day (nanana)
Some got jobs and some sell yea’
Others just smoke and f*ck all day”
Nelly, “St. Louie”
I got to ride a waverunner this weekend, for the first time. I have a fresh perspective on life now.
Builidng on the sucess of the last Schwagstock, I will once again be doing the visuals for the next one, June 6 and 7 at Ozark Outdoors.
So, what’s an enterprising geek to do when confronted with a new gig?
Buy more gear, of course.
I finally bit the bullet and dented the credit card for a pair of these. No more scan converter! 7 lbs! It’s all in there, audio, video, onboard MPEG-4 decoder. I think I might be able to get the whole thing down to a single powerstrip. Now I can crossfade between two digital sources, I used to work from a tape and a computer, but now…oh buddy, lookout.
My heart was heavy on Friday, when I discovered that Dr. Edgar F. Codd passed away on April 18th.
Dr. E. F. Codd is recognized as the man who did the math to come up with the relational calculus. Just think this guy really made all the great web apps we use to day possible. Because these ideas govern the functioning of relational databases.
And what a geek too. He was like “Umm, I’m too geeky to build the thing, I’m gonna define the rules by which it will work, and prove it to a mathematica certainty.” Wow! That takes chutzpah! Yes, I can prove that you will be able to store and retrieve your data.
And this was all done in th 70’s. The big daddy relational systems were not available until the mid 80’s, and oracle didn’t come on the scene until after IBM’s DB software…
The real pity though, is that he never got any real financial remuneration from this! All that work, and no pay!
Anyway, the world is less of place after April 18th.
