NAS experiment

Well, it feels like I have some free time these days. So what am i doing? Why experimenting with a NAS of course…

Ian gave me an old Compaq RAID with a 486 inside. The perfect test bed for a NAS deployment. So, I’m spending some free time trying to get Linux installed on it, so that I can set up the RAID, and install the necessary software for network connectivity.

HTTP/DAV
SMB/CIFS
NFS/AFS/Coda
Appletalk

Once that is in place, I’m going to get a tape drive, setup a backup server on one of the spare machines. And then its on with the wackiness!

Rockin’ good news…

So, all this work with photoshelf is paying off. I’ve got a templated, css driven set of three of the apps that are needed by photoshelf. Things are much faster, and where possible, there’s less html transmitted, making the whole experience smoother.

So — check it out at:

Geekforce PhotoShelf

I’ve put alot of time into this. And it is finally starting to take shape. Theres alot more to be done yet, but away we go!

Thanks to Ben Buxton, for an excellent base to work form - PhotoShelf truly is best of breed gallery managment.

Just wait until i do the MovableType Interface!

Its been two weeks…

So, its been two weeks since <Company Name Here> laid me off. You’re probably wondering what I have been doing in that time.

Well, it took alot longer than i thought to get my resume in tip-top shape. No thanks in part to the management consulting group that <Company Name Here> hired to help with the transistion. These people thought that spending two weeks on a resume was just fine!

I’m here to tell you that two weeks to write a resume seems way too long to me.

Anyway, this managment consulting firm thinks that they can just take there own sweet time helping “through this transition” - to hell with that, all I need is a job, not psychiatric counseling.

Recruiters have been pretty cool. The best ones are the ones that take the time to get to know you so that they can help to sell you. So far I’ve had three do that, and one not. I think that if you find yourself in this situation, you need to get your face in front of as many of these peopple as you can, take the shotgun approach, let them do the leg work for you. Be a shotgun.

But, remember that you are in control of the process, and if they do not make you feel comfortable, then beg off, and go somewhere else.

Its really funny right now, that guiys like me are a dime a dozen, just like the recruiters are too. So, its a well populated jungle out there, use it.

Perfect dinner last night…

I must say that last night’s dinner was absolutely great!

I call it Carribean Surf and Turf. Thats because the steak had a Carribean red wine suace - It was AWESOME. Red wine and a Habanero pepper!

Anyway, I started the night with a Spanish Tapas - Garlic Shrimp. This had some Red Pepper flakes in the sauce, along with Red Wine vinegar, and olive oil.

So people could nosh on that while I was finishing the steaks.

The steaks were marinated in a Olive oil, Red Wine Vinegar, dark rum and 3 minced cloves of Garlic ( I cheated, I just pressed them).

The steaks were served with a Cinnamon rice - this was an incredible complement to the heat of the sauce, and the steak.

Bummer

My former company is scaling back, and as a result, I got fired today…

Bummer.

More stability

So…

I spent the weekend in Springfield, MO. I went to my cousin’s wedding. Photos to come soon.

Anyway, when I got home, the application server - the machine that hosts the ldap server and the postgres database for photoshelf had frozen.

I dug through the messae log, and noticed that the kernel was not loading the driver for the IDE chipset. The disk drives were timing out, and this was causing the freeze.

I needed the SiS5513 chipset drivers - I have SiS7×0 in the system.

So, I installed this driver, and now I wait for the next freeze - hopefully it wont happen again.

I made the same changes on the web server as well.

We’ll see…

XHMTL, CSS and Phtoshelf

Well, Thanks to alot of free time, I am doing more work on Photoshelf.

You can see the work progressing…

I’ve decided to get modern in my design method and start using CSS for real. This will make it easier for me to program and easier for designers to approach as well.

The traffic logs indicate that lot of you are using IE 4.0, Please bear with me as I learn how to make this a pleasent experience for everyone.
