Heh heh heh!

Thanks to CmdrTaco’s poetry generator, I generated this poem from the geekforce page:

geekforce and half days.
Our domain! Sorry not for them…
Now but
things about my phone
line is a speedstream soho modem.
died. using a good DSL modem? died.

We’re capped.

So, I’m serving this from my basement over my DSL link. As you know we were down over the weekend. This is because my modem died. I’m using a spare provided by my roommate. Unfortunately, my iniability to diagnose the problem lead to a truck roll

The bottom line is that when the tech looked at our line down to the CO, he saw lots of resistance on the line. This means that performance will never be what it could.

Damn these old phone lines!

So actually the truck roll was a good thing, I found out some essential things about my phone line - it’s old - and I got the news about the modem.

Anyone know whwere to go to get a good one? best bets on a good DSL modem?

Oh yeah, we’re capped at 192k…

Bummer…

post-outage update…

Yes…
We were down all weekend.

I am such a broadband addict now, that I go into withdrawal after a few days.

It looks as though my modem went bad on us. I’m going to buy a speedstream soho modem. Any one know if they’re any good?

New machines new performance

I finally received the new machines. 1.2GHz Duron CPU’s.

One of these has been running the web server for a few weeks now, but we had a snafu and the wrong stuff got shipped…

Long story short, I’ve got the machine, and it boots, but I think I need a new kernel, because this one (2.2.19) does not like the onboard ethernet.

Gimme few days to resolve this, and all will be fine…

What do you know?!

So, I get back from San Francisco, and voila, there are offers for our domain! Sorry not interested…

Anyway, I’m still trying to get the database into its new home - a 1.2 GHz Duron. But I’ve been having some stability issues with the Duron CPU - I had to learn things about the Kernel, Durons, and how to build for them…

Now that I have some reliability, I can go ahead and bring the photoshelf app online.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but things are looking up around here.

Sorry, not for sale

So, site goes down, site comes back up, and two people contact me to see if they can purchase Geekforce.com.
hmmmm
Check out geekforce, and geekforce.

San Francisco

120-2051_IMGWe made it to San Francisco. It took four and half days. Our route was:

St. Louis, MO.
Lincoln, NE.120-2062_IMG
Cheyenne, WY.
Reno, NV.
San Francisco, CA.

We had no real surprises during the trip. All in all, it was pretty great. San Francisco is a great city. This will be the third time I’ve been here, and I’m really getting to know it pretty well.

I’ve never taken a trip like this. We’ve taken a total of 280 pictures so far! Som really gorgeous stuff in Wyoming and Nevada in particular.

I drove the Donner Pass. That was really challenging.

At any rate, Bruno and I are here, and over the next few nights, we’re gonna become `Fat & Sassy’(tm). We ate at Fog City Diner last night. Really good.

Trip from St. Louis to San Francisco

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated *Kansas is basically flat.

Driving through Nebraska and Wyoming is liike peeling an onion. As you crest each hill top, you come to see new hils with slightly different landscape and geology happen.

In 200 miles we went from green forested land to khaki, sand prairie, to red and burnt umber desert.

* WPG2 Plugin Not Validated * You also notice a real change in altitudes as you ascend to the high plains.

To see the land changing around you that quickly is pretty awe inspiring.

It’s important to note that there is NOTHING around you. At all…

And so I fiud mysellf pondering broadband access in the desert. I’ve got some neat pictures of pho0ne lines in Wyoming and Nevada.

Uptime

On the duron front:

Here’s the deal:

OK, this is now geekforce.com.

Ian and I have been hosting theis since 1995. I’ve got a lot of the older stuff that we did in a bunch of tar files, and we are working on sorting through all of that.

What works:

monty’s old stuff, the Apple Doomsday clock…

Ian’s old stuff. except for poe, but I’ll fix that tonight.

So, enjoy.

We’re geekforce, we’re here, and we got old school, and new school.
East and West coast!

Later.
